Latvia has more extreme activities than most visitors expect — the issue is that practical information about prices, seasons, and what it actually takes to participate is scattered across dozens of websites. This guide puts it all in one place.
Every activity here is genuinely available in Latvia, with specific prices and practical details — where to book, who it's suited for, and what to bring. Adrenaline levels range from moderate to maximum.
1. Bobsled Track in Sigulda
The Sigulda Bobsled and Luge Track is one of only 18 such facilities in the world, and the only one in the Baltics. Built in 1986 in the stunning Gauja Valley, it's not just for professional athletes — both winter and summer, it's open to visitors with several ride options.
In winter (October–March), three options are available: Vuchko — a soft-bob holding up to 5 people reaching speeds of 80 km/h; skeleton bob — lying face-down, headfirst; and ice rafting — an inflatable raft on the ice track, the gentlest option. In summer (May–October), the summer bob runs on wheels with a professional pilot, reaching 85 km/h through 13 curves.
The track also offers free walks around the territory with a viewing platform at 30 m height. Combine it with Sigulda sightseeing, Turaida Castle, or the cable car — an ideal day trip from Riga (1 hour drive).
2. Tandem Paragliding
Tandem paragliding is one of the most accessible ways to experience flight — no engine, no runway noise, just wind and a view from 300–450 metres up. The largest operator in Latvia is the "Adrenaline" club, operating since 2000.
The process: the paraglider lies spread out behind you on the ground. You're connected with the instructor in a tandem harness. A winch car pulls you into the air up to ~450 m, then the cable is released and you glide freely. You need to run about 10 metres at takeoff. In the air, choose between a calm flight (8–15 min) or an aerobatic thrill ride (6–8 min).
Important: flights depend on weather (cancelled in strong wind >7 m/s, fog, or thunderstorms). Book 1–3 days ahead and be prepared for date changes. Bring comfortable clothing with long sleeves and sports shoes.
3. ATV Forest Rides
ATV rides through forest trails are available almost year-round in Latvia, in virtually any weather. Near Riga, the most popular operators are "Jena Motors" in Vecmīlgrāvis (10 km from the centre) and "KMH" in the Sigulda area (30 km from Riga).
Rides go through sand pits or forest paths with an instructor escort. Beginners get a simpler route, experienced riders get tougher terrain. The ATVs have power steering, so they're not physically demanding to operate.
4. Wakeboarding
Cable wakeboarding is a summer adrenaline classic in Latvia. A cable system pulls you instead of a boat, making it cheaper and more accessible. The most popular spot is the OWAKE Active Recreation Park near Riga. Rancho Parks near Valmiera offers two tracks with SUP rental and inflatable water attractions.
5. Jet Skiing
Jet ski rides are available all over Latvia — from Jūrmala and Tukums to Ludza and Liepāja. Prices start from about €21 for 10 minutes and can reach €99 for a full hour. It's one of the quickest ways to get an adrenaline rush on water with zero prior experience.
6. Tandem Skydive
A tandem skydive is the big one — the experience most people describe as one of the most powerful emotions they've ever felt. In Latvia, Skydive Latvia offers jumps from 4,000 m at Limbaži Airfield, about an hour's drive from Riga.
The process: after a ~20-minute ground briefing, you and your instructor board the plane and climb to 4,000 m in about 15 minutes. Then the door opens. Freefall lasts approximately 60 seconds at around 200 km/h, then the instructor deploys the parachute and you glide down for ~5 minutes, taking in Latvia's landscape from a bird's-eye view.
Statistically, tandem skydiving is very safe — on average, one serious incident per 500,000 jumps. The instructor controls everything — all you need to do is enjoy it.
7. Oxygen Jump from 5,500 m
If a standard tandem from 4,000 m doesn't seem enough, the Skydive Latvia Oxygen Jump is the next level — a jump from 5,500 metres. It's the highest civilian tandem skydive in Eastern Europe.
At 5,500 m, the air is significantly thinner, so you breathe supplemental oxygen through a mask during the climb and before the jump. Freefall lasts roughly 90 seconds at ~250 km/h. This is the highest-adrenaline experience available in Latvia.
8. Showelrace — Shovel Sliding on a Bobsled Track
Showelrace is a uniquely Latvian invention — amateur racing where participants slide down the Sigulda bobsled track on specially designed shovels. Statistically, it has more participants than professional bobsled, skeleton, and luge sports combined.
The season runs from October to March. Average speed on ice: 60 km/h. Events are held roughly 10 times per season. You need: warm clothes and proper gloves. Shovels and helmets are provided.
