How safe is skydiving?
Skydiving is significantly safer than most people assume. According to the United States Parachute Association (USPA), 2024 saw a historic low of 9 fatalities from approximately 3.88 million jumps — a rate of just 0.23 per 100,000 jumps, or 1 in 431,111. Tandem jumps, where a beginner is harnessed to a certified instructor, have an even better safety record than these overall statistics.
Since 1961, when the USPA began tracking fatalities, the death rate has dropped by over 98%. Modern technology drives this improvement — Automatic Activation Devices (AADs) deploy the reserve parachute at a preset altitude, ram-air canopies provide precise control, and standardized training programs ensure every jumper is properly prepared. The vast majority of incidents involve experienced skydivers performing advanced maneuvers, not tandem passengers.
For perspective: the lifetime odds of dying in a car accident in the US are 1 in 93. In skydiving, the risk per jump is 1 in 431,111. Skydive Latvia uses only internationally certified equipment, follows USPA, FAI, and LIF safety standards, and every instructor has 2,000–3,000+ jumps of experience.
How does a tandem jump work?
In a tandem jump, you're securely harnessed to an experienced instructor in a dual-harness system and jump from 4,000 meters altitude. Freefall lasts approximately 60 seconds at around 200 km/h, then the instructor deploys the parachute and you glide together under the canopy for 5–7 minutes, enjoying aerial views of the Latvian countryside. No prior experience or lengthy preparation is required.
The process starts when you arrive at Limbaži Airfield (about 1 hour north of Riga). After registration, you receive a 15–20 minute ground briefing covering body position during freefall, the exit procedure from the aircraft, and landing technique. Then you're fitted with specialized gear, and you board the aircraft with your instructor and pilot.
The aircraft (Pilatus Porter PC-6/B2-H4) climbs to 4,000 meters in approximately 15–20 minutes. At the door, the instructor performs a final harness check, and then — freefall. This is the most intense part: adrenaline, wind, and the sensation of flight. After the parachute opens, calm takes over — you can look around, take in the scenery, and even chat with your instructor.

Book your jump →What are the requirements for skydiving?
For a tandem jump, the requirements are straightforward: minimum age 18 (or 16 with parental consent), maximum weight 105 kg, and a completed health questionnaire. No prior athletic training is needed. However, there are some health conditions you should be aware of before booking.
Key restrictions include serious cardiovascular conditions, epilepsy, recent surgeries, and pregnancy. Maximum height is 205 cm, and weight is assessed proportionally to height. If you have any doubts about your health status, we recommend consulting your doctor and contacting our team before booking — we always try to find a solution.
On jump day, you must be sober (no alcohol or substances in the preceding 24 hours). Physical fitness is a bonus but not a requirement — the instructor manages the entire jump process. The only thing you need to do during freefall is maintain the correct body position, which your instructor will teach you during the briefing.

The best preparation for a tandem jump is a good night's sleep, a light meal, and arriving with a positive attitude. The ground briefing happens on-site and takes 15–20 minutes — you don't need to learn anything complex beforehand. The key is trusting your instructor, who controls the entire process from start to finish.
Practical tips: avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your jump. Stay well hydrated, especially in summer. Eat a light breakfast or lunch — an empty stomach at altitude isn't pleasant, but neither is overeating. If you wear glasses, bring them along — you can jump with glasses under the protective goggles.
The question that worries many: "What if I'm scared?" That's a completely normal reaction, and our instructors have 25 years of experience working with first-time jumpers. The nervousness typically disappears the moment freefall begins — excitement replaces fear almost instantly. If you're feeling very anxious, feel free to call us beforehand — +371 20164579 — and we'll walk you through the process step by step.
What types of skydiving exist?
There are three main formats for beginners and professionals: tandem jumps, AFF training, and solo jumping with various disciplines. Each format has its own requirements and skill level. All paths begin with tandem — it's how 99% of people experience freefall for the first time.
Tandem jump is designed for complete beginners. You jump attached to an instructor who handles all technical actions — parachute deployment, maneuvering, and landing. You don't need to make any decisions in the air. This makes tandem an ideal first experience and an excellent gift.
AFF (Accelerated Freefall) is an internationally recognized training program for those who want to become independent skydivers. The course includes theory, practical ground training, and 8 supervised jumps with an instructor. Skydive Latvia offers AFF courses with USPA-certified instructors, and upon successful completion, you earn an internationally recognized skydiving license.
Solo jumping and disciplines — after completing AFF and gaining additional jump experience, you can learn formation skydiving (building shapes in freefall as a group), freestyle, angle flying, or wingsuit flying. Wingsuit requires at least 200+ jumps of experience and separate training. It's the highest level of skydiving, where you literally fly horizontally in a special suit with fabric "wings."

What to bring on jump day?
Bring a valid ID, comfortable athletic shoes (no heels or sandals), weather-appropriate clothing, and a great attitude. All necessary equipment — jumpsuit, helmet, goggles, and of course the parachute — is provided by Skydive Latvia on-site.
Clothing: athletic pants or jeans (not too loose), a closed top layer. Temperature at altitude is significantly lower than on the ground — at 4,000m it can be 15–20°C cooler than ground level, so in cooler weather a thin jacket underneath is helpful. If jumping on a hot summer day, a T-shirt is enough — the jumpsuit protects from wind.
Don't leave in the car: water (waiting can take time, especially on weekends), sunscreen in summer, and cash or card for the photo/video service if you haven't purchased it in advance. Your mobile phone must stay on the ground — it cannot be taken on the jump for safety reasons. Photos and video are captured by a professional camera operator who jumps alongside you.

Do I need prior experience for skydiving?
No. Tandem jumps are specifically designed for people with zero experience. You jump with a certified instructor who controls the entire process. Only a brief on-site briefing (15–20 minutes) is needed.
How long does freefall last?
A standard tandem jump from 4,000m provides approximately 60 seconds of freefall. The Oxygen Jump from 5,500m offers around 90 seconds. After parachute deployment, the canopy ride lasts an additional 5–7 minutes.
Do gift cards expire?
Skydive Latvia gift cards have no expiration date. The recipient can use the card in any season they choose. Cards are available for specific services and in flexible denominations — €100, €300, or €500.
What is the maximum weight limit?
The maximum weight for a tandem jump is 105 kg, and maximum height is 205 cm. Weight is assessed proportionally to height. If you're close to the limit, get in touch — we'll evaluate on an individual basis.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety always comes first. If weather conditions don't allow a safe jump (strong wind, rain, low cloud base), the jump is rescheduled to another date at no extra charge. We contact clients early in the morning if the forecast has changed.
Can I jump wearing glasses?
Yes. Simply bring your glasses along, and they'll be placed under the protective goggles. Contact lenses also work fine — the goggles protect your eyes from the wind.
How many people can jump at the same time?
The aircraft can carry several tandem pairs at once. If you're planning a group event (birthday, corporate outing, stag/hen party), contact us in advance so we can organize sequential jumps and ensure the whole group experiences it together.
When is skydiving season in Latvia?
Skydive Latvia's season typically runs from May to October. Jumps take place every day when weather permits. The most popular months are June, July, and August, so we recommend booking your jump early, especially for weekends.
Does the AFF course grant an international license?
Yes. Skydive Latvia's AFF training program follows USPA standards, and upon successful completion you earn an internationally recognized skydiving license. Course pricing starts from €840 (basic level) up to €2,350 (complete course with equipment).
