What is SUP and why try it?
SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) is a water sport where you stand on a wide, stable board and propel yourself with a single long paddle — it combines a full-body workout with relaxation in nature and is accessible to anyone regardless of age or prior experience. Most people can balance on the board within their first few minutes.
SUP is one of the few sports that trains your entire body simultaneously — legs maintain balance, core and back stabilise your posture, arms and shoulders drive the paddle stroke. At the same time, a calm paddle along a canal or lake at sunset offers an almost meditative experience.
SUP's popularity in Latvia has surged in recent years — Riga's city canal, the Daugava River, and Jūrmala's Lielupe have become favourite paddling spots. The season typically starts in April and runs through late September or even October, depending on the weather.

Riga offers at least four popular SUP routes — from a 6 km canal loop to longer trips around islands, all starting from Andrejosta or Lucavsala.
| Route | Distance | Duration | Difficulty | Start from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City canal | ~6 km | 1–2 h | Easy (beginners) | Andrejosta |
| Canal + Daugava | ~6.5 km | 2–3 h | Medium | Andrejosta |
| Around Lucavsala | ~7 km | 2–3 h | Medium | Lucavsala or Andrejosta |
| Around Zaķusala | ~7.5 km | 2–3 h | Medium–hard | Lucavsala |
The city canal is the best choice for your first paddle — calm water, no ship traffic, and beautiful city views on both sides. Around Lucavsala is the most popular "next step" — more of a nature feel, fewer people, and a chance to spot wildlife along the banks.
Caution on the Daugava: The Daugava has ship and ferry traffic. Always wear a life jacket, stay close to the shore, and avoid the centre of the channel. On windy days (>5 m/s), choose the canal or a sheltered lake instead.

What to know before your first SUP session
SUP is one of the easiest water sports to learn — most people can balance on the board and start paddling within 5 minutes. A few practical tips will make your first experience safer and more enjoyable.
Clothing. Wear comfortable sportswear that can get wet. On hot days, swimwear and a T-shirt are enough. In cooler weather (April, September), a wetsuit or windbreaker is recommended. Footwear: neoprene water shoes or old trainers — not sandals, not barefoot.
Safety. Always wear a life jacket — every rental includes one. Check the weather forecast before heading out: avoid SUP if wind speed exceeds 5 m/s or thunderstorms are expected. Bring your phone in a waterproof pouch.
Beginner technique. Start on your knees, not standing — this gives you stability. Once you feel confident, slowly stand up with feet shoulder-width apart in the centre of the board. Look at the horizon, not your feet. Paddle 3–4 strokes on one side, then switch.
What to bring: water bottle, sunscreen (SPF 30+), sunglasses with a strap, phone in a waterproof pouch. Leave valuables in the car or a rental locker if available.
What else to try if you enjoy active recreation in Latvia
If you love the freedom and adrenaline of SUP — the next level could be something even more intense.
Tandem skydiving. Skydive Latvia offers tandem jumps from 4,000 m altitude for €239 — approximately 60 seconds of freefall at around 200 km/h. No prior experience needed — you jump harnessed to a certified instructor. The airfield is in Limbaži, about one hour from Riga.
Oxygen Jump from 5,500 m. The highest civilian tandem jump in Eastern Europe. Approximately 90 seconds of freefall with supplemental oxygen mask — €490.
Other active experiences: bouldering (climbing gyms in Riga, from €10), padel (padel clubs in Riga, from ~€22/h), indoor go-karting (Kartings.lv, from ~€18), or kayaking on the Gauja in summer.
Gift cards are a great way to give any of these experiences. Skydive Latvia gift cards are available from €30 and have no expiration date — the recipient chooses the best time.
