Why Līgatne is worth visiting and how to get there
Līgatne is a small town in Cēsis municipality, around 75 km from Riga via the A2 highway (~1 hour by car). It lies inside Gauja National Park and stands out for its sandstone cliffs, more than 300 hand-carved sandstone caves, the only current-powered ferry in the Baltics, and a remarkably well-preserved Soviet-era secret bunker.
Unlike Sigulda or Cēsis, which fill up with tourists every summer, Līgatne stays quiet. Its sights are discreet — the bunker hides under a rehabilitation centre, the caves are carved straight into Lustūzis cliff in the town centre, and the historic paper mill village still goes about its everyday life. That low-key atmosphere is exactly why some travellers pick Līgatne over the busier Vidzeme routes.
Getting there: by car along the A2 motorway to Augšlīgatne, then follow signs. By public transport, take a bus from Riga International Coach Terminal to Augšlīgatne or Cēsis, then a local bus or taxi onward. For a wider picture of what's on offer in the region, see our guide to extreme activities in Latvia.
What are the 6 main sights in Līgatne?
Six attractions define a Līgatne visit: the Nature Trails (wildlife), the Soviet Secret Bunker (Cold War history), the Gauja Ferry (engineering heritage), the Net Park (active leisure), Lustūzis Cliff with its cellar caves (landscape and culture), and Vienkoči Park (woodcraft). All can be combined in a one- or two-day route.
Līgatne Nature Trails
The Nature Trails are Līgatne's best-known attraction — over 5 km of well-maintained paths inside Gauja National Park, where Latvia's native forest animals live in semi-wild enclosures: moose, lynx, wild boar, foxes, wolves, brown bears, and birds of prey including owls and eagle-owls. Founded in 1975, the loop takes about 2–3 hours.
The route winds through ravine-cut woodland, with a 22-metre observation tower opening views over the ancient Gauja Valley. The animal enclosures mimic natural habitats — this is not a concrete-floored zoo. Prices: adults €7, students €5, seniors €6.
Local tip: animals are most active early morning (9–11 a.m.) and late afternoon (4–6 p.m.). On a hot summer midday, the lynx and bear will likely be napping in the shade and harder to spot.

Soviet Secret Bunker
The Soviet Secret Bunker sits 9 metres underground beneath the "Līgatne" Rehabilitation Centre. It covers 2,000 m² and was built in the 1980s as a wartime command shelter for the Latvian SSR leadership in case of nuclear war. Declassified only in 2003, the bunker has kept its authentic Soviet equipment — communications hotlines to Moscow, diesel generators, ventilation systems — fully intact.
Tours run 1–1.5 hours. Prices: in Latvian €8 per person (€5 for students, seniors and people with disabilities); in English or Russian €13. You can also book a Soviet-era meal in the underground canteen and join the immersive reality game "Object X". Booking ahead is required — call +371 64161915.
Practical note: the bunker stays at +10 to +12 °C year-round, regardless of the weather above ground. Bring a warm jacket, even in July.

Līgatne Ferry
The Līgatne Ferry is the only current-powered cable ferry still operating in the Baltic states — no engine, just the Gauja River's flow. The platform is built from two parallel steel boats joined by a wooden deck, kept on course by a cable stretched across the river while the current does the work. It's officially listed as a technical heritage monument.
One-way fares: pedestrians and cyclists €1; cars (with passengers) €3.50; minibuses and trucks €5. Same-day return: €1.50, €6, and €9 respectively. Free for children under 7. Operating hours: daily 7:30–18:00, water levels permitting. During spring floods, hard freezes, or droughts the ferry may not run — call +371 25737578 before driving out.
Net Park
The Net Park is a treetop adventure zone 4–7 metres above the ground, where every walkway, bridge and platform is wrapped in 2.5-metre-high net walls. It's not a classic ropes course with harnesses and carabiners — kids and adults can run, jump, swing and climb freely without any extra gear. Suitable from age 3.
Prices for a 1-hour ticket (valid up to 3 hours): kids 3–5 years €5, kids 6–17 years €8, adults 18+ €10. Groups of 10+ get a 30% discount; show a Nature Trails ticket for 20% off. Address: Gaujas iela 4, Līgatne (in the Zeit creative quarter). Open Thursday to Sunday — for current seasonal hours see tikluparks.lv; booking required at +371 25779944.
Lustūzis Cliff and caves
Lustūzis (also called the Cave Cliff) is a sandstone outcrop on the right bank of the Līgatne River, right in the town centre. The cliff is honeycombed with 28 hand-carved cellars — some on two levels — historically used to store vegetables and fruit. Lustūzis is the only spot in Līgatne with multi-level cellar caves, and the wider area holds more than 300 such carved hollows in total.
Visiting is free and possible at any hour. A viewing platform on the opposite bank gives a clean photo angle, while wooden stairs lead to the top of the cliff for a view across the Līgatne Paper Mill and the town centre. Cave temperature stays around 6–8 °C even in summer, which is exactly why locals used them as natural cold-storage cellars.
Vienkoči Park
Vienkoči Park lies along the Līgatne River and combines walking trails with wood sculptures, scale models of historic estates, ethnographic buildings, dugout boats, and Latvia's first sandbag house. Inside the park, the Woodcraft Museum is set up as an old workshop showing how artisans built household items and dugouts from the Stone Age onwards.
Open daily 10:00–18:00 (winter: until dusk). Picnic spots are free for families up to 5 people; there's also a wooden playground for kids. Phone: +371 29329065. More information: vienkoci.lv.
How to plan a single day in Līgatne
A realistic day plan: nature trails in the morning (~2.5 h) plus Lustūzis cliff (~30 min), lunch at a Vienkoči Park picnic spot or Pavāru Māja restaurant, an afternoon bunker tour (1.5 h), and finishing with the ferry crossing or a net-park session. A full day for a family of four costs roughly €60–75 excluding food and fuel.
| Sight | Adult price | Child price | Time needed | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nature Trails | €7 | €5 (students) | 2–3 h | Year-round |
| Soviet Bunker | €8 (LV) / €13 (EN) | €5 (students) | 1–1.5 h | Year-round |
| Ferry | €1 (pedestrian) | Free under age 7 | 15–20 min | Water-dependent |
| Net Park (1 h) | €10 | €5 (3–5 yrs) / €8 (6–17) | 1–3 h | May–October |
| Lustūzis Cliff | Free | Free | 30 min | Year-round |
| Vienkoči Park | Varies by activity | Family discounts | 1–2 h | Year-round |
Seasonal notes: in summer (May–September) the full list is open, including the net park and ferry. Autumn adds the colour show that makes the nature trails worth a second visit. Winter focuses on the bunker (warmer than outside) and snow-tracked trails where you can spot animal prints through the woods. For more planning ideas, see our guide to nature activities near Riga.
Why Līgatne makes a great experience gift
Līgatne attractions — especially the Soviet bunker and the net park — have become popular experience gifts for birthdays, year-end celebrations, and corporate outings. The reason is simple: it's an experience you can't pick up at a store, and it stays in memory longer than any physical present.
The bunker's evening tour with flashlights, a Soviet-era meal, and the "Object X" reality game is the kind of story people retell for years. Net Park sessions get booked for kids' birthdays, milestone celebrations, even small wedding parties. If you want a wider list of gift ideas or you're putting together a group event, our page on group events, stag-hen parties and team building is a good next stop.
After Līgatne — see Latvia from the sky
Līgatne is all about depth — nine metres underground in the bunker, hundreds of carved caves in sandstone cliffs, ravines and valleys cutting through Gauja National Park. If those underground experiences left you wanting something stronger, the natural next step is to point yourself in exactly the opposite direction: up.
A tandem skydive from 4,000 metres is the inverse of Līgatne: where the bunker has pressure and silence, freefall hits you with airflow at around 200 km/h, and Latvia opens up below as a living map. Limbažu Airfield, where Skydive Latvia operates, is about 80 km from Līgatne — within a single day's driving range if you want to combine both adventures.
A tandem skydive from 4,000 m costs €249 — that includes all gear, instructor, and around 60 seconds of freefall. Optional photo and video, €89. Anyone aged 16 and up can jump (16–17 with parental consent), maximum weight 105 kg.
For something even more demanding, Oxygen Jump from 5,500 metres is the highest civilian tandem skydive in Eastern Europe. Freefall lasts about 90 seconds, top speed reaches 220 km/h, and supplementary oxygen masks are mandatory at that altitude. Price: €490.
To see what tandem skydives over Limbažu Airfield actually look like and feel like, watch our short video:
If you're not sure when the gift recipient will want to jump — this summer or three years from now — our gift cards have no expiry date. They never time out. Gift cards start at €30 and are valid for any Skydive Latvia service.
Frequently asked questions about Līgatne
How much is entry to the Līgatne Nature Trails?
€7 for adults, €5 for students, €6 for seniors. Children and people with disabilities have discounts or free entry on presentation of relevant documents. Current prices: ligatnesdabastakas.lv.
Can I just walk into the Soviet bunker without booking?
In summer there are scheduled tours weekdays at 15:00 and Saturday/Sunday at 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. To guarantee a spot, call +371 64161915 or +371 26467747 in advance. In winter (November–April), tours run weekends only and weekdays by booking.
How do I check whether the Līgatne ferry is running today?
The ferry stops working when the Gauja water level is too high (spring floods) or too low (dry summer), and during ice season. Call +371 25737578 before driving out to confirm the day's status.
Is the Net Park suitable for small kids?
Yes. There's a separate ticket for ages 3–5 (€5). All nets are surrounded by 2.5 m safety walls, so the falling risk is minimal. Younger kids tend to stick to the lower levels, while the higher sections (up to 7 m) are better suited to teens and adults.
Is there a restaurant in Līgatne worth a visit?
Pavāru Māja in the Līgatne countryside is a Michelin Green Star restaurant with a seasonal, locally sourced menu. Vienkoči Park has picnic areas and works with local caterers for group meals. For a quicker lunch, look at the cafés in Augšlīgatne and Cēsis.
Can I reach Līgatne by public transport from Riga?
Yes. Buses run regularly from Riga International Coach Terminal to Cēsis and Augšlīgatne. From Augšlīgatne to Līgatne town and the nature trails it's about 4 km — most travellers cover that by taxi or local bus. Moving between sights without a car is harder, which is why most visitors drive.
How long do I need to see all of Līgatne?
One day realistically covers 4 of the 6 main sights (for example: nature trails, bunker, ferry, and Lustūzis cliff). To see everything including Vienkoči Park and the Net Park, plan two days with an overnight stay in a local hotel or guesthouse.
Is there skydiving in Līgatne?
Skydiving isn't offered in Līgatne itself — the national park area doesn't host commercial skydive operations. The closest tandem jumps are at Limbažu Airfield with Skydive Latvia, around 80 km from Līgatne.
Can I use a Skydive Latvia gift card to visit Līgatne?
No — Skydive Latvia gift cards are valid only for our services (tandem skydive, Oxygen Jump, AFF courses). However, our cards have no expiry date, so the recipient can hold onto them and use them whenever the timing is right. Prices start at €30.
