Skydiving Age Restrictions in Latvia: The Complete Guide

Last updated: 21 May 2026

In Latvia, tandem skydiving and the AFF training programme are available from age 16 with written parental consent and a parent present on jump day, or from age 18 independently. There is no upper age limit — health status decides instead. A separate weight limit of 105 kg applies (proportional to height, max 205 cm). The jump season at Limbaži airfield runs April through October. Skydive Latvia gift cards have no expiration date.

What is the minimum age for skydiving in Latvia?

In Latvia, the minimum age for a tandem skydive is 16 years, with written parental consent and a parent or guardian physically present at the airfield on jump day. From 18 years onward a participant can sign their own waiver and jump independently. The same age rules apply to the AFF (Accelerated Freefall) training programme.

In practical terms, a 16-year-old can jump — but only if one parent is on site at Limbaži airfield and has signed the consent paperwork. A phone call, an emailed signature or a letter without physical presence is not accepted. At Skydive Latvia, jumps for under-18s are coordinated separately from the standard online booking flow, so the team needs to be contacted in advance, not on the morning of the jump.

Children and teenagers below 16 cannot make an actual tandem parachute jump in Latvia. If the goal is a controlled freefall experience for a younger family member, the closest alternative is the Aerodium wind tunnel in Sigulda, which simulates skydiving freefall and is open from age 4.

Why is the minimum age set at 16?

The 16-year threshold is not arbitrary. It reflects what is known about human development, what tandem harness equipment is designed to fit, and what the legal framework in Latvia allows.

Physiologically, by 16 the body has usually reached a frame size and proportions compatible with tandem safety equipment. Harnesses and buckles are engineered around adult anatomy. On a body that is too small or too narrow, straps may not seat correctly — which at terminal velocity is an unacceptable risk.

Psychologically, 16 is the age at which most teenagers can absorb and follow instructions under genuine stress. In freefall, wind noise is loud enough that an instructor cannot speak — the only communication is a small set of hand signals briefed on the ground. That requires focus that younger children may struggle to maintain through the adrenaline spike of jumping out of a plane.

Legally, Latvian law treats 16-year-olds as capable of limited decisions made jointly with a parent or guardian. From 18, a person is fully legally competent and can sign jump waivers on their own.

If the jumper is 16 or 17, the process has a few more steps than the adult flow. Here is the practical sequence:

  1. Contact Skydive Latvia in advance. Minor jumps are not handled through the standard online booking form. The team needs to prepare the consent paperwork and align scheduling.
  2. Get the written parental consent ready. Skydive Latvia provides the template. It must be signed by one parent or the legal guardian.
  3. The parent or guardian comes to the airfield with the jumper. Physical presence is required for the full duration of the experience — from the pre-jump briefing through to landing. This requirement cannot be replaced by email, phone or video call.
  4. Fill in the health questionnaire honestly. Both the jumper and the parent sign it. Chronic conditions, recent surgery, or neurological history must be disclosed.
  5. Attend the standard pre-jump briefing. It takes 15–30 minutes and covers body position, hand signals and the landing procedure.
Practical tip: If you plan to book a tandem skydive as a gift for a 16- or 17-year-old, confirm before purchase that one parent can physically come to Limbaži airfield on the chosen day. Otherwise, a gift card is the safer choice — the recipient can use it after turning 18, and Skydive Latvia gift cards have no expiration date.

Is there an upper age limit for skydiving?

There is no formal upper age limit for tandem skydiving in Latvia. The deciding factor is health and physical capability, not the year on a passport. Tandem skydives are routinely made worldwide by people in their sixties, seventies and eighties, and the oldest recorded tandem jumpers were past 100.

What changes with age is how carefully the health questionnaire is reviewed. From around 50–60 onward the instructor takes a closer look and may ask for a doctor's clearance in specific cases. The main areas of scrutiny are:

  • Cardiovascular health. A recent heart attack, a pacemaker, or uncontrolled blood pressure means a conversation with a doctor is essential before booking.
  • Joints and spine. Landing imposes a brief load of roughly 2G on the body. Significant joint or spinal issues raise the risk of injury on touchdown.
  • Neurological history. Epilepsy or a history of fainting is an absolute contraindication — the freefall phase requires guaranteed, uninterrupted consciousness.
  • General mobility. The jumper must be able to lift their legs on approach and stand up after landing.

What other physical requirements apply beyond age?

Age is one filter among several. The tandem checklist runs in parallel with other criteria, all verified before each jump.

CriterionSkydive Latvia requirementWhy it exists
Age16+ with parental consent and presence, or 18+ independentlyPhysiological and legal responsibility
WeightMaximum 105 kg, proportional to heightTandem rig certification limit
HeightMaximum 205 cmHarness sizing and landing ergonomics
PregnancyNot permittedHarness pressure and abdominal load
Alcohol / drugsStrictly forbiddenInstructor will refuse the jump without refund
Health questionnaireMandatory for all participantsCovers cardiac, neurological and musculoskeletal risks

The weight–height combination is the most important non-age filter. The 105 kg ceiling is calibrated to international tandem certification standards — it is not a figure Skydive Latvia sets by choice. A jumper outside the equipment's certified range cannot be safely accommodated, full stop.

Together, these criteria form the full safety system. For a deeper look, see Skydive Latvia's separate article on how tandem skydiving safety works in practice.

Do age requirements differ between a tandem jump and AFF training?

No — the age rules are identical: 16+ with parental consent or 18+ independently. The real differences between the two products lie elsewhere: in goal, preparation, and the instructor's role.

A tandem skydive is a one-off experience. You jump harnessed to a certified instructor who controls the entire jump from exit to landing. Preparation takes 15–30 minutes. No prior skills are required, and no licence is earned.

AFF (Accelerated Freefall) is an 8-level training programme aimed at teaching you to skydive solo. It starts with 4–6 hours of ground training and progresses through eight jumps in which you gradually take over body control, parachute deployment and landing. On completion, you earn an internationally recognised USPA licence.

Tandem or AFF: which one to choose

Choose tandem if: you want a one-off adrenaline experience, you are 16–17 (and a parent can come along), you do not want to commit several days to training, or you are not yet sure whether skydiving is for you.

Choose AFF if: your goal is to become a licensed solo skydiver, you are ready for several days of intensive training, and you plan to keep jumping after the course.

How should you prepare for your first jump?

Preparation is not complicated, but a few practical steps will make the experience much more enjoyable — whether you are a 16-year-old jumping with a parent or a 65-year-old crossing it off a long list.

  • Check the age, weight and health requirements in advance. If any criterion is borderline, contact Skydive Latvia before you book, not on the morning of the jump.
  • Fill in the health questionnaire honestly. It is not a formality — it is the only way the instructor can assess your risk profile. An undisclosed heart condition or seizure history can be catastrophic at altitude.
  • Eat a light meal 2–3 hours before the jump. An empty stomach combined with adrenaline and motion can produce nausea. A heavy meal is even worse.
  • Avoid alcohol the night before and on jump day. The instructor is empowered to refuse the jump without refund if alcohol is suspected.
  • Dress for the activity. Sports clothing and laced sport shoes — no sandals, no high heels. Skydive Latvia provides the jumpsuit and helmet.
  • Plan for a flexible schedule. Skydiving depends on weather. The Skydive Latvia team calls 1–2 days in advance to confirm the precise time slot.
  • Get mentally ready for freefall. The first 3 seconds after exit are the most intense. After that the body adapts and the remaining 50–60 seconds are genuinely enjoyable.

How to book a jump with Skydive Latvia

If the age and health requirements are met, booking is straightforward. Skydive Latvia operates from Limbaži airfield, about an hour's drive from Riga. A Pilatus Porter PC-6 takes tandem pairs up to 4,000 metres, where freefall lasts approximately 60 seconds at speeds up to 200 km/h.

FAQ

Can a 14-year-old make a tandem skydive in Latvia?

No. The minimum age for tandem skydiving at Skydive Latvia is 16 with written parental consent and a parent present at the airfield. A 14-year-old cannot make a tandem jump in Latvia. The closest alternative is the Aerodium wind tunnel in Sigulda, which is open from age 4 and simulates freefall.

Is signed parental consent enough on its own if the parent cannot attend?

No. For jumpers aged 16 or 17, physical presence of a parent or legal guardian at the airfield is required for the entire duration of the experience. Written consent without physical presence is not sufficient — this requirement is not negotiable.

Is there an upper age limit at Skydive Latvia?

No formal maximum age applies. The decision is based on the health questionnaire and the instructor's assessment. People in their sixties, seventies and beyond jump regularly when general health and mobility are good. From around 50 onward it is sensible to consult a family doctor first.

What are the weight and height limits?

Maximum weight for a tandem jump is 105 kg, and it must be proportional to height. Maximum height is 205 cm. These limits are set by international tandem equipment certification standards and cannot be exceeded.

Are the age rules different for the AFF programme?

No. AFF training has the same age requirements as a tandem jump — 16 with parental consent or 18 independently. The differences are in preparation time (4–6 hours of ground school), training structure, and outcome — earning a standalone USPA skydiving licence.

How do gift cards work for a minor recipient?

Skydive Latvia gift cards have no expiration date. That means if the recipient is under 16, they can simply use the card after reaching the minimum age. Recipients aged 16–17 can use the card only with parental consent and a parent present on jump day.

Does the season affect the age rules?

Age rules stay the same all year, but the jump season at Limbaži runs only April through October — jumps are not made in winter due to weather. Gift cards with no expiration date are a good winter option because the recipient can pick a date in the following season.

Author: Aleksandrs Tuls — skydiving coach, Skydive Latvia. I have seen plenty of jumpers arrive at Limbaži with the wrong picture of the age rules in their head. My observation: 16-year-olds backed by their parents and 60+ jumpers with good general health often enjoy the jump more than the average 30-year-old. Follow the rules and come jump safely.
